Sailing Pathways Zoom 2026
On March 24, 2026, the New Jersey Youth Sailing Foundation hosted a well-attended Zoom that brought together voices from across the state’s youth sailing community. Led by board members Tracy Van Dorpe and Clay Johnson, the session highlighted the Foundation’s growing role as a hub for connection, shared learning, and resources.
More than two dozen participants joined from South Jersey, the Philadelphia region, Central and North Jersey, and New York. Experienced sailing parent Liz Hull shared practical insight from over a decade in the boatyard while other parents, junior sailors, program leaders, and supporters all jumped into the conversation.
The focus of the evening was mapping youth sailing pathways in New Jersey. Tracy outlined common boat classes—Optimist, Club 420, and ILCA—while Liz spoke to how sailor goals, time, and family considerations shape decisions about boats and involvement levels. Clay emphasized the foundational value of Opti experience, and high school sailing and private race teams were recognized as key pathways for engagement and sailor development.
With opportunities (and Zoom attendees) stretching from Sandy Hook Bay to Cape May, a common challenge was simply knowing what’s out there and how best to take advantage of what’s offered across the state. Several noted a gap in ILCA training, and many said transitions between boats can feel unclear. There was appreciation for the Foundation’s efforts to make these pathways easier to find and navigate, including its all-in-one calendar and resource page.
Even with challenges, the takeaway was clear: there’s real energy around youth sailing in New Jersey. NJYSF is excited to build on it—bringing people together and helping more families find their way in the sport. Those with ideas and suggestions are encouraged to reach out!
